Q: What is myomassology?
A: "Myo" means "muscle," "mass" means "massage," and "-ology" means "study of," so it's the study of muscle massage. From Massage Therapy 101, "This technique was developed at a time when Swedish massage was seen as the only form of bodywork. But massage therapists wanted to develop a massage therapy program that included deep tissue bodywork along with a holistic approach. Thus myomassology was born and it provides a holistic approach to good health which includes the healing and balancing of the mind, body and spirit."

Q: What should I expect for my first appointment?

A: First appointments must allow an extra 15 minutes for completion of an intake form (download by clicking here), which allows your therapist to review your medical history, health concerns, and any “trouble spots” that you may have. All clients must fill out these intake forms as a regular part of treatment. After the intake, the therapist will instruct you to remove any jewelry or gum, and will step out of the room so that you can undress. Before leaving, your therapist will instruct you to get on the table, under the covers, and will also tell you to start face up or face down. If you have any questions at any time, please let your therapist know. No question is a silly question! Those receiving chair massage will also fill out a short intake and release form and will remain clothed.

Q: Why do I have to fill out paperwork to get a massage?

A: All clients will fill out paperwork related to their health and injury history. It is important to be truthful and complete because a massage can affect certain health conditions. We have to make sure it is safe for us to massage an area. (For example, if a woman tells us on her intake form that she is pregnant, we can massage her but must make sure to use supportive pillows. Or if a man tore his ACL playing basketball, we would know when to treat the leg with massage and when to avoid it.) Secondly, filling out a brief intake form also allows the client to review our policies and their rights as massage clients.

On-site (i.e. party or event) clients also have a form specific to those services. We allow first-time clients to fill out their forms prior to the appointment if they wish. You can download the form here to get a head-start. Additionally, filling out paperwork will not affect the appointment duration of first-time clients. You only need to fill out intake forms once.

Q: I had a massage before, but I had a bad experience and/or it hurt!

A: Massage is not intended to hurt, whether old or young, male or female. The important thing is to relax, breathe, and communicate with your therapist. We are here to serve you and will gladly make adjustments to pressure or adjust techniques used. If therapeutic work (not just “relaxation”) is requested, some pressure to work out the affected areas might be necessary. Open communication is what is most important in this case.

Q: I’m sort of self-conscious. What if I don’t like a part of my body? Do I have to get undressed?

A: The great thing about being human is that we’re all different. Your therapist has worked on hundreds of different bodies and all body types as well as encountered people with hair, burns, scars, wrinkles, lumps, bumps, and bruises! We are not making light of the situation, because we respect you and where you are at, but rest assured that there is no judgment of our clients, only a sincere focus on their well-being and providing a great experience. We have done massage on people who are clothed, nude, and everything in between. We’ll be honest; Many massage techniques are best performed when the client is undressed, but this is about you. Talk to us and we’ll discuss anything that you are unsure of. Please note that the client’s body is always properly draped to expose only the area being worked on.

Q: What areas do you service?

A: We work in the state of Michigan only, in a 20-mile radius of 696/75 Interchange at no extra charge. Service can be arranged outside of standard service area, but a flat $10 travel fee applies for every 10 mile segment outside of regular service area. For a visual map, please click here

Q: Do you have gift certificates?

A: Yes, we offer gift certificates. Purchase them online or in person for any amount or for a specific service. We mail them at no charge to you or to the recipient. They are good for five years from the date of issue and are not redeemable for cash. (See Services page, midway down the page, for styles available!)

Q: What types of payment do you accept?

A: We accept cash, money order, credit cards (Visa, MasterCard, Discover, Amex via Paypal or in person), and personal checks. We can offer receipts at your request. Click here to request a customized Paypal invoice.

Q: Do you bill insurance? Do you work with doctors?

A: At this time we are unable to bill insurance. Some people with a prescription have successfully sought reimbursement from Flexible Spending Accounts, but this is between the client and their plan administrator or employer. We have and will work with doctors, provided that we have a signed release from the client. Some conditions require coordination of care, as massage can and does affect the body’s systems.

Q: I’m pregnant or just getting over an injury/illness. Can I get massage?

A: Usually! We reserve the right to request a doctor’s note (including their practice's contact information) prior to receiving massage. Massage is great and safe for most pregnancies and many other health conditions you may be recovering from. However, it’s a good idea to take precautions before massage is performed for your safety and for our records. Download: Pregnancy Physician’s Release or General Physicians Release

Q: What is your cancellation policy? What is your policy for missing appointments?

A: (Updated 8/23/11) We have a 24-hour cancellation policy. If you do not call to cancel within 24 hours of your appointment time, you will owe a $25 fee. If you do not call to cancel and then are unavailable when we arrive at your location, you will owe the full base fee. Kindly notify us as soon as possible if you must cancel an appointment. If you find a person to take your appointment the fee is waived.

Q:What about appointments that I have to end early or begin late?

A: If client is tardy for their massage session, therapist will work within the available time left and the full fee must be rendered. Massage services can and will be terminated if client acts inappropriately (i.e.: seeking sexual massages). Revolve Massage Therapy offers therapeutic, non-sexual massage services only. Client must be properly draped at all times.

The client has the right to terminate their session at any time. If any session is terminated by the client ahead of schedule for any reason or by the therapist for client inappropriateness, the full fee must still be rendered.
